THE PENNINE VILLAGE OF LUDDENDEN
Silver Medal - Britain in Bloom 2005
Now that the Christmas and New Year festivities are over it’s now time to look forward to the renewal that spring brings to the Luddenden valley. Once again with the village’s continuing support the in Bloom team will lead the campaign to bring home the coverted best village title in the Yorkshire in Bloom 2007 competition. We still need more green-fingered volunteers so if you have a few hours to spare give us a call, numbers at the bottom of the page.
What’s been happening around the village?
The in Bloom team met on Thursday 4th January to discuss this year’s competition. One of the areas in which the village does struggle is lack of children involvement due to there being no school in the village centre. We hope to overcome this as contact has been made with both Midgley and Luddenden Dene schools to explore ways the staff and children can get involved. Further information on this exciting project in next month’s newsletter.
2007 sees us striving to improve the quality of our displays and this year we will be using another local supplier for our annual bedding. An order has been placed with Kitsons Nurseries in Southowram them and at a later date we will let you know what will be going in various containers around the village.
Whilst on the subject of plants thank you to everyone who sponsored the spring bulbs, which have been planted around the village. The sum of £370 was raised which again will be ploughed back into the competition.
Jobs to do this month
The main message to everyone is to keep off the soil while this wet weather persists. Don’t just sit there though find a seed catalogue and plan your garden. Even the smallest plot can find room for some salad and vegetables and certain varieties can be grown in pots and containers. If weather permits and you need a spot of fresh air go round the garden and tidy up any debris. Use a rake to get between plants and take stock of what you have. Remember to compost the waste. Check your soil. Do you need to feed it? Now is the time to spread compost or manure over the area and leave it for the worms to work it in for you. If the soil is heavy fork in some grit to help drainage but only when it has dried out otherwise it will be like walking on a quagmire.

Bird Life
Continue to feed the birds as any cold spells now could cause a disaster to these little creatures. Listen out for Robin song as they stake out their breeding territories. Look out for the small flocks of long tailed tits.
